About The Role

Job Summary: The Bosun (Boatswain) is the senior-most deck crew member responsible for supervising and coordinating the daily maintenance and operational tasks of the deck department. They oversee mooring operations, deck maintenance, and assist with cargo handling. The Bosun ensures that deck crew members perform their duties efficiently and safely while maintaining the ship’s exterior. Key Responsibilities: Deck Crew Supervision & Training Directs and supervises deckhands, able seamen, and ordinary seamen. Assigns daily tasks related to cleaning, painting, and deck maintenance. Provides training on seamanship, rope handling, and safety procedures. Mooring & Anchoring Operations Leads the deck crew in mooring and unmooring procedures when the ship enters or leaves port. Assists in anchoring and ensures the anchor equipment is in good working condition. Monitors the ship’s ropes, chains, and mooring lines to prevent damage. Deck Maintenance & Repairs Ensures the decks, railings, and external ship structures are properly maintained. Oversees painting, rust removal, and general upkeep of the ship’s exterior. Reports maintenance needs to the Chief Officer and coordinates minor repairs. Cargo Handling & Storage Assists with the loading and unloading of cargo and ship supplies. Ensures safe storage of equipment, ropes, and tools on deck. Follows safety regulations for handling hazardous materials. Safety & Emergency Procedures Assists in emergency drills, such as abandon ship and fire response exercises. Ensures lifeboats, rescue boats, and safety gear are properly maintained. Works with the Safety Officer to implement deck safety measures.

Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements: Education: High school diploma or maritime training school certificate. Certifications: STCW Certification, Basic Seamanship Training. Experience: 5+ years as a deckhand or able seaman, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role. Skills: Strong leadership, teamwork, technical seamanship, and problem-solving skills. Work Conditions & Benefits: Works in rotational shifts (typically 4-6 months onboard, followed by leave). Salary ranges from $3,500 to $6,500 per month, depending on experience and cruise line.
