About The Role

Reports To: Staff Captain (Chief Officer) Supervises: Safety Team, Crew Members (during safety drills) Job Summary: The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring that all safety protocols, drills, and equipment comply with maritime regulations. They oversee crew training, emergency preparedness, and shipboard safety operations. Their primary focus is accident prevention and ensuring that safety measures are strictly followed by both crew and passengers. Key Responsibilities: Safety Compliance & Regulations Ensures the ship complies with SOLAS, ISM Code, and STCW safety regulations. Conducts routine safety inspections of lifeboats, firefighting equipment, and emergency exits. Maintains accurate safety reports and logs for audits and inspections. Emergency Preparedness & Training Organizes and leads emergency drills, including fire, abandon ship, and man overboard drills. Trains crew members on emergency procedures, evacuation protocols, and first aid. Works with officers to update emergency plans and response strategies. Firefighting & Life-Saving Equipment Management Inspects and maintains fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, and fire doors. Ensures lifeboats, life rafts, and rescue boats are functional and properly equipped. Coordinates maintenance schedules for safety equipment with relevant departments. Accident Prevention & Risk Assessment Identifies potential safety hazards and enforces corrective measures. Investigates onboard accidents and incidents, providing reports to senior officers. Works closely with the Chief Engineer to ensure technical safety standards are met. Crew & Passenger Safety Awareness Conducts safety briefings for new crew members and passengers. Ensures safety signage, emergency exits, and escape routes are clearly marked. Enforces policies regarding hazardous materials and restricted areas.

Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Science, Marine Safety, or equivalent. Certifications: STCW Certification, Crowd & Crisis Management, Safety Management Systems (SMS) training. Experience: 3+ years of experience in maritime safety, preferably as a deck officer. Skills: Strong leadership, risk assessment, crisis management, and training abilities. Work Conditions & Benefits: Works on rotational shifts (4-6 months onboard, followed by leave). Salary ranges from $4,500 to $8,500 per month, depending on experience and cruise line. Accommodations, meals, and insurance provided onboard
