About The Role

Reports To: Second Officer Supervises: Deck Crew (during assigned shifts) Job Summary: The Third Officer is an entry-level officer responsible for assisting in the safe navigation of the ship, maintaining safety equipment, and performing watchkeeping duties. They play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with maritime safety regulations and supporting senior officers in daily operations. Key Responsibilities: Bridge Watchkeeping & Navigation Monitors the ship’s position, radar, and communication systems. Assists in maintaining navigational charts and voyage plans. Reports obstacles, vessel traffic, and weather changes to senior officers. Safety & Emergency Duties Conducts regular safety equipment inspections, including lifeboats and fire extinguishers. Participates in safety drills, including abandon ship and firefighting exercises. Ensures compliance with SOLAS and ISM Code safety standards. Security & Environmental Compliance Assists in monitoring ship access and security patrols. Ensures adherence to MARPOL regulations for pollution prevention. Reports any suspicious activities or environmental concerns to senior officers. Deck Operations & Maintenance Assists with mooring, anchoring, and cargo handling when required. Works with the bosun and deckhands in maintaining deck equipment. Reports any deck maintenance issues to the Chief Officer. Training & Crew Support Provides guidance to deck cadets and junior crew members. Participates in ongoing officer training programs. Supports the First and Second Officers in daily operational tasks.

Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Science, Marine Transportation, or equivalent. Certifications: STCW Certification, Officer of the Watch (OOW) License. Experience: 1-3 years of maritime experience, ideally with bridge watchkeeping. Skills: Strong observational skills, teamwork, safety awareness, and decision-making. Work Conditions & Benefits: Works in rotational shifts (4-6 months onboard, followed by leave). Salary ranges from $3,500 to $6,000 per month, depending on experience and cruise line.
