About The Role

Job Summary: The Staff Captain (Chief Officer) is the second-in-command after the Captain and is responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the ship. They oversee deck operations, safety procedures, and security measures while ensuring that the ship complies with maritime regulations. The Staff Captain steps in to assume command if the Captain is unavailable. Key Responsibilities: Second-in-Command Duties Acts as the Captain’s primary assistant and assumes command when necessary. Manages daily ship operations and enforces company policies. Communicates with department heads to coordinate cross-functional operations. Safety & Security Management Supervises safety drills, emergency response protocols, and lifesaving equipment checks. Ensures compliance with SOLAS, STCW, and ISM Code regulations. Oversees the ship’s security team and maintains access control measures. Navigation & Bridge Operations Assists in voyage planning, weather monitoring, and bridge team coordination. Ensures navigational charts, logs, and bridge equipment are up to date. Conducts regular inspections to maintain operational efficiency. Crew Supervision & Training Oversees deck officers, bosun, and deckhands in ship maintenance and operations. Organizes training for crew members on emergency response and ship procedures. Conducts performance evaluations and disciplinary actions when necessary. Maintenance & Environmental Compliance Ensures proper maintenance of lifeboats, rescue boats, and firefighting equipment. Monitors fuel consumption, waste disposal, and environmental protection policies. Works closely with the Chief Engineer to coordinate technical maintenance schedules. Guest Relations & Crisis Management Addresses serious guest concerns and safety issues onboard. Assists the Captain in handling emergencies such as medical evacuations or security threats. Acts as a public representative of the cruise line when required.

Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Science, Marine Transportation, or equivalent. Certifications: STCW Certification, Chief Mate License (Unlimited Tonnage). Experience: 7+ years in maritime operations, with at least 3 years as a senior deck officer. Skills: Strong leadership, crisis management, decision-making, and communication skills. Work Conditions & Benefits: Works on 3–6 month contracts, with rotational leave periods. Salary ranges from $8,000 to $15,000 per month, depending on experience and cruise line. Accommodations, meals, and insurance provided onboard.
