About The Role

Job Title: Second Officer Department: Deck Department Reports To: First Officer (Navigation Officer) Supervises: Third Officer, Deck Crew (during watch shifts) Job Summary: The Second Officer plays a crucial role in the navigation and safety operations of a cruise ship. They assist in voyage planning, maintain navigational charts and equipment, and ensure the safety of passengers and crew. They also oversee watchkeeping duties on the bridge, ensuring compliance with maritime laws and operational efficiency. Key Responsibilities: Navigational Duties Assists in route planning and execution under the supervision of the First Officer. Maintains and updates nautical charts, electronic navigation systems, and logbooks. Monitors weather reports and recommends course adjustments if needed. Bridge Watchkeeping Conducts navigational watch shifts, ensuring the ship stays on course. Monitors radars, GPS, and communication systems for safe passage. Reports any obstacles, vessel traffic, or hazards to senior officers. Safety & Emergency Procedures Conducts regular inspections of lifeboats, rafts, and firefighting equipment. Assists in safety drills such as abandon ship and fire response exercises. Ensures compliance with SOLAS and other maritime safety regulations. Environmental & Security Compliance Ensures adherence to MARPOL regulations regarding waste disposal. Assists in security patrols and maintains ship access control when required. Reports security threats or suspicious activities to the Chief Officer. Crew & Junior Officer Supervision Mentors Third Officers and deck cadets in navigation procedures. Assigns deck maintenance tasks during shifts and ensures completion. Trains crew members on bridge operations and safety protocols. Qualifications & Requirements: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Science, Marine Transportation, or equivalent. Certifications: STCW Certification, Officer of the Watch (OOW) License. Experience: 3+ years in maritime operations, preferably with bridge watchkeeping experience. Skills: Excellent decision-making, navigational expertise, safety awareness, and teamwork. Work Conditions & Benefits: Works on rotational shifts (4-6 months onboard, followed by leave). Salary ranges from $4,500 to $8,000 per month, depending on experience and cruise line. Accommodations, meals, and insurance provided onboard.

Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering or equivalent. Certifications: STCW Second Engineer License, Engine Room Resource Management (ERM). Experience: 4+ years in the Engine Department, preferably as Third Engineer. Skills: Mechanical expertise, leadership, troubleshooting, and fuel management.
