About The Role

Department: Engine Department Reports To: Captain Supervises: Second Engineer, Third Engineer, Fourth Engineer, Electrical Engineers, Engine Crew Job Summary: The Chief Engineer is responsible for the overall maintenance, operation, and efficiency of the ship’s propulsion system, power generation, and mechanical equipment. They oversee the Engine Department and ensure that all machinery functions properly to guarantee safe and smooth sailing. Key Responsibilities: Engine Room Management & Operations Oversees the operation and maintenance of the main engines, generators, and auxiliary systems. Ensures the ship’s fuel, lubrication, and cooling systems function optimally. Monitors and maintains HVAC, water purification, and sewage treatment systems. Team Leadership & Supervision Leads the Engine Department, assigning duties to engineers and engine crew. Trains and mentors junior engineers to ensure proper knowledge and safety practices. Conducts regular briefings with engineers to address operational concerns. Safety & Compliance Ensures compliance with IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, and ISM Code regulations. Maintains engine logbooks and ensures records are up to date. Oversees emergency drills related to fire suppression, engine failure, and oil spills. Repairs & Maintenance Coordinates scheduled maintenance of all shipboard mechanical and electrical systems. Diagnoses and troubleshoots mechanical failures, overseeing repairs. Liaises with shore-side engineers and technical teams when major repairs are needed. Energy Efficiency & Fuel Management Monitors fuel consumption and optimizes energy efficiency. Ensures environmental regulations are followed, including waste and emissions control. Supervises bunker (fuel) operations and ensures proper fuel handling procedures.

Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering or equivalent. Certifications: STCW Chief Engineer License, Engine Room Management Certification. Experience: 5+ years of experience as a Second Engineer or Senior Engineer. Skills: Strong leadership, troubleshooting, mechanical expertise, and safety management. Work Conditions & Benefits: Works in rotational shifts (typically 4-6 months onboard, followed by leave). Salary ranges from $8,000 to $15,000 per month, depending on experience and cruise line.
