Deck Department
Reports To: Bosun, Chief Officer Supervises: N/A Job Summary: The Ordinary Seaman (OS) is an entry-level deck crew member responsible for assisting in general ship maintenance, deck operations, and safety procedures. This role provides an opportunity for individuals to gain hands-on experience and progress toward becoming an Able Seaman (AB). Key Responsibilities: Deck Maintenance & Operations Cleans, paints, and maintains the ship’s deck, hull, and other exterior areas. Assists in mooring, anchoring, and line-handling operations. Helps secure cargo and equipment on board. Watchkeeping & Lookout Duties Serves as a lookout on the bridge, reporting obstacles and navigational hazards. Assists in monitoring weather conditions and ship movements. Stands watch under the supervision of senior deck officers. Safety & Emergency Response Participates in fire, abandon ship, and man-overboard drills. Assists in maintaining and inspecting life-saving equipment (lifeboats, life jackets, and rafts). Follows all safety protocols as per maritime regulations (SOLAS, ISM Code). Support for Senior Crew Members Helps the Able Seaman (AB), Bosun, and Deck Officers with daily tasks. Performs basic rope work, splicing, and handling ship equipment. Assists in cleaning and organizing deck storage areas.
Qualifications & Requirements: Education: High school diploma or maritime training program. Certifications: STCW Certification, Basic Safety Training. Experience: No prior experience required (entry-level position). Skills: Willingness to learn, physical fitness, teamwork, and attention to detail. Work Conditions & Benefits: Works in rotational shifts (typically 4-6 months onboard, followed by leave). Salary ranges from $1,500 to $3,500 per month, depending on cruise line and experience.
