About The Role

Department: Deck Department Reports To: Chief Officer Supervises: Deck Crew (when on duty) Job Summary: The Second Officer (Second Mate) is responsible for assisting in navigation, ship operations, and safety management. They serve as the ship’s Medical Officer and are in charge of updating navigational charts and equipment. The Second Officer also stands watch on the bridge and ensures compliance with maritime safety regulations. Key Responsibilities: Navigation & Watchkeeping Stands bridge watch and ensures safe navigation of the vessel. Monitors weather conditions, ship position, and traffic while at sea. Maintains the ship’s electronic navigation equipment (radar, GPS, ECDIS). Safety & Emergency Procedures Assists in conducting safety drills, including fire, abandon ship, and medical emergencies. Oversees maintenance of life-saving appliances (lifeboats, life rafts, fire extinguishers). Ensures compliance with SOLAS, ISM Code, and company safety policies. Medical Officer Duties Manages the ship’s medical supplies and first-aid kits. Provides basic medical assistance to crew and passengers when necessary. Coordinates with onshore medical teams in case of serious health issues. Chart & Logbook Management Updates and corrects nautical charts and publications as per latest notices. Ensures ship logbooks are accurately recorded and maintained. Keeps records of voyage data, including weather reports and navigational incidents. Deck & Cargo Operations Assists with mooring, anchoring, and cargo handling operations. Supervises deck crew during watch shifts. Supports Chief Officer in maintaining ship stability and ballast operations.

Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation or Nautical Science. Certifications: STCW Certification, OOW (Officer of the Watch) License, Medical First Aid Certificate. Experience: 3+ years in the Deck Department, preferably as a Third Officer or Deck Cadet. Skills: Strong problem-solving, medical knowledge, navigation expertise, and leadership skills. Work Conditions & Benefits: Works in rotational shifts (typically 4-6 months onboard, followed by leave). Salary ranges from $4,500 to $8,000 per month, depending on the cruise line and experience.
