Department: Deck Department Reports To: Captain Supervises: Second Officer, Third Officer, Bosun, Deck Crew Job Summary: The Chief Officer (First Officer) is the second-in-command of the vessel, directly assisting the Captain in the ship’s operations, navigation, and safety procedures. They are responsible for overseeing the Deck Department, ensuring the vessel complies with maritime regulations, and managing the ship’s stability, cargo operations, and security. Key Responsibilities: Navigation & Bridge Operations Assists the Captain in overseeing navigation, including route planning and watchkeeping. Ensures compliance with international maritime regulations and safety protocols. Monitors weather conditions and adjusts course as necessary. Deck Department Management Supervises the deck officers, bosun, and deck crew, ensuring efficient operations. Manages the maintenance of the ship’s exterior, lifeboats, and deck equipment. Conducts performance evaluations and provides training to deck officers and crew. Safety & Security Oversight Serves as the ship’s Safety Officer, ensuring compliance with SOLAS and ISM Code. Conducts safety drills, including fire and abandon ship exercises. Oversees security procedures, ensuring the ship remains secure at sea and in port. Cargo & Stability Management Ensures proper loading, unloading, and securing of cargo, if applicable. Monitors the ship’s ballast and stability, ensuring a safe and balanced vessel. Maintains cargo documentation and compliance with international standards. Emergency Response & Crisis Management Acts as the second-in-command during emergencies, assisting the Captain. Leads crew members in emergency situations and ensures all safety measures are followed. Coordinates with medical officers and security teams in response to incidents.
Qualifications & Requirements: Education: Bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation or Nautical Science from a maritime academy. Certifications: STCW Certification, Chief Mate License, Bridge Resource Management. Experience: 5+ years in the Deck Department, including time as a Second Officer. Skills: Leadership, crisis management, navigation expertise, teamwork, and decision-making. Work Conditions & Benefits: Works in rotational shifts (typically 4-6 months onboard, followed by leave). Salary ranges from $6,000 to $12,000 per month, depending on the cruise line and experience. Accommodations, meals, and insurance provided onboard.
