Department: Deck Department Reports To: Bosun (Boatswain), Officer of the Watch Supervises: N/A Job Summary: The Deck Cadet (Trainee Officer) is a trainee position designed for individuals pursuing a career as an officer in the Deck Department. Deck Cadets receive on-the-job training under the supervision of senior officers, learning essential navigational skills, safety protocols, and ship operations. This role serves as a stepping stone to becoming a qualified officer in the maritime industry. Key Responsibilities: Training in Navigation & Bridge Operations Assists the deck officers during bridge watchkeeping to learn navigational skills. Observes the operation of the ship’s radar, GPS, and other navigation systems. Gains experience in maintaining and updating the ship’s logbook and charts. Deck Maintenance & Operational Support Helps the deck crew with maintenance duties such as cleaning, painting, and organizing deck equipment. Assists in mooring and anchoring procedures under supervision. Supports the deck officers in ensuring the ship’s safety equipment is operational. Safety & Emergency Response Training Participates in regular safety drills, including fire, abandon ship, and lifeboat exercises. Learns how to handle emergency situations and assists during drills. Inspects safety equipment, such as life jackets and lifeboats, under supervision. Supervision & Guidance Receives mentorship and feedback from senior deck officers and Bosun. Attends training sessions on maritime laws, regulations, and operational procedures. Takes part in learning sessions regarding cargo handling, deck operations, and bridge navigation. Crew Support Assists with the daily operation of the deck crew, including mooring and cargo operations. Supports the Bosun and officers in their respective roles and responsibilities. Helps with the preparation of the ship for docking, departure, and other port operations.
Qualifications & Requirements: Education: Enrollment in a Nautical Science or Marine Transportation program at a maritime academy. Certifications: STCW Certification, Basic Safety Training, or as required by the maritime academy. Experience: Typically no prior maritime experience required. Skills: Strong desire to learn, attention to detail, good communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team. Work Conditions & Benefits: Rotational shifts for 4-6 months onboard, followed by leave. Salary ranges from $1,500 to $3,000 per month depending on the cruise line and progression in training. Accommodation, meals, and insurance provided onboard.
