About The Role

Job Title: Ordinary Seaman (OS) Department: Deck Department Reports To: Bosun (Boatswain), Chief Officer Supervises: N/A Job Summary: The Ordinary Seaman (OS) is an entry-level deck crew member responsible for assisting in general ship maintenance, deck operations, and safety procedures. They support the Able Seamen (AB) and Bosun in daily tasks, including cleaning, painting, cargo handling, and mooring operations. This role serves as a training position for those looking to advance to an Able Seaman or higher-ranking deck role. Key Responsibilities: Deck Maintenance & Operations Cleans decks, railings, and exterior areas of the ship. Assists in painting, rust removal, and general upkeep of the vessel. Helps with stowing, securing, and organizing deck equipment. Mooring & Anchoring Assistance Assists the deck crew during mooring and unmooring operations. Handles ropes and mooring lines under supervision. Supports anchoring operations and maintains anchor chains. Watchkeeping & Security Duties Stands lookout duty on the bridge, reporting any hazards or vessel traffic. Assists in monitoring ship access points and patrolling deck areas. Reports any unusual activities or security concerns to senior officers. Safety & Emergency Procedures Participates in ship safety drills, including fire and abandon ship drills. Helps inspect and maintain lifeboats, life rafts, and safety gear. Follows SOLAS and other maritime safety regulations. Training & Career Advancement Receives training in seamanship, navigation basics, and ship operations. Works under experienced crew members to develop practical maritime skills. Gains experience required for promotion to Able Seaman (AB).

Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements: Education: High school diploma or maritime training certificate. Certifications: STCW Certification, Basic Seamanship Training. Experience: No prior experience required; ideal for those entering the maritime industry. Skills: Strong work ethic, physical stamina, eagerness to learn, and teamwork. Work Conditions & Benefits: Works in rotational shifts (typically 4-6 months onboard, followed by leave). Salary ranges from $1,800 to $3,500 per month, depending on experience and cruise line.
